Moms Talk: Special Needs Kids and Nosy Moms

Check out what other moms in your neighborhood are chatting about this week and then put in your two cents!

Question: My son was recently diagnosed with ADHD and we have decided to try medication. I am appalled at all the naysayers out there who have given me grief over this decision. My mom guilt has doubled with all their comments; aren't I helping my child by doing what I feel is best for him?

Answer: I believe it was Abe Lincoln who once said, "You can't please all of the people all of the time." I wish I had learned that a lot sooner in life; it would have saved me much frustration. I chose to medicate my oldest son years ago, and it was definitely the right decision for our family. When other parents shook their heads and put in their two cents, I simply started saying, "You don't live under my roof." They had no idea what a difficult road I'd gone down to get to where I was. I felt I was doing not only my son and our family a favor by trying medication, but his peers and teachers as well. But many choose not to medicate, and that's their choice too. The bottom line is, you're the mom, not them. Stand your ground and hold your chin high; they'll back off eventually.
