Whiz Kid: Abbie Douglas

School, Grade: Trabuco Mesa Elementary, Sixth Grade

Whiz Kid Achievement: Abbie recently tested for her black belt in Tang Soo Do at OC Kicks, Orange County School of Martial Arts, in Rancho Santa Margarita.

Key to Awesomeness: Abbie Douglas knows a thing or two about martial arts. In fact, this sixth grader recently tested for her black belt, or Cho Dan, in Tang Soo Do at OC Kicks Martial Arts Studio where she has been studying the past several years. The test was a total of six hours long, and she took it in two hour blocks. She felt good about the experience and looks forward to seeing her results in early December.

Abbie says that breaking boards is one of her favorite elements of martial arts. She not only practices in the studio, but also practices at home, and she plans to continue in martial arts and pursue her Second Dan—the next rank—in the next couple of years. 

Abbie took her test with another sixth grade classmate from Trabuco Mesa and OC Kicks, Adam Gilliland, who also enjoys surfing and math.

As part of their test, both black belt candidates were required to perform a community service project, and they chose to help with the Toy Drive for Boys and Girls Town of California, which ensures children who cannot be with their families this holiday receive special gifts. The students visited Boys Town in Trabuco Canyon, where they interviewed the staff and created gift tags for the tree in the lobby, decorated it, and gave speeches to students and their families at OC Kicks about the project during classes the past week.

In addition to martial arts, Abbie plays AYSO soccer and enjoys science at school.
