What I've discovered is that what kids need the most are also among the simplest of things: TalkingRead More and holding. They don't need gazillion-dollar toys and Mozart in the womb. They need to be held and they need to be talked to and they need to be fed when hungry. Dads can do this, too! You can't imagine the damage done to the human psyche when these basic steps are not taken in the early years. Having parented children who missed these basic needs, I now feel like congratulating every mom in the grocery store who has her baby in the front of the cart, cooing and talking to them throughout what can be a mundane chore. They're doing great and giving the babies/toddlers exactly what they need!
MFriedrich May 7, 2013 at 12:20 am
It's pretty amazing what women can do: grow a baby inside their bodies, deliver the baby throughRead More their bodies, feed the baby with their bodies. Makes the male contribution seem kind of curt and lame. But that's only half of it. There's a whole world of a million little things that end up being really, really big things that matter a ton later on. Those are things frequently unseen or missed that great moms do, but for which I'm grateful. That all said, personally I place mothers of special needs children above all the rest. If it were up to me, they'd get a celebratory day all to their own.
Penny Arévalo (Editor) May 6, 2013 at 07:27 pm
As an adoptive mom, this is a nice sentiment, but it does not tell all the story. Not every adoptionRead More begins with a brave decision by a birth mom to give up her baby. Many children end up abandoned or taken by the state for their own protection. So I say happy Mother's Day to all the foster moms and adoptive moms of older children and a prayer for all those little ones and not-so little ones waiting for their forever families. Let's not forget them either.

We have a mixed economy, not a free market. The debate always seems to be about the boundaries ofRead More government vs. the market. How is it possible to create an efficient and humane society with an appropriate balance of government and the market? If the market failure has led to greater inequality, what role should the tax system play in the redistribution of wealth? If we do nothing, what are the implications for society and the present status quo? Some choices proposed include: Reduce income taxes on corporations. Raise taxes for the wealthy. Consider consumption tax. Consider a flat fair tax. Just raise the payroll taxes without any limits on income. Do nothing. http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/DC-Decoder/2012/0626/Is-the-US-tax-system-fair http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/briefing-book/improve/ http://www.usgovernmentrevenue.com/income_tax_history Link repeated elsewhere http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/07/paul-krugman-david-stockman_n_3033003.html?utm_hp_ref=politics&ir=Politics Should we create a simpler tax system? Interesting topic and debate. The toll road will get finished because Rancho Mission Viejo will putRead More enough pressure onto our existing infrastructure for people to want it. Roads, however, are not the answer...well, except to a developer. Roads continue to worsen the already horrendous environmental nightmare that is Southern California. In other words, single family homes and cul de sacs are not sustainable for the long haul. We need to look at ways of seriously reducing the footprint. Things like hub cities connected by high speed rail. Somewhere there is a younger Roger Faubel looking into that. No offense, Rog.
Jonathan Volzke March 25, 2013 at 08:47 pm
Clint, I have no idea what you're talking about. But again, neither do you. Tollroads are built byRead More the TCA. Yes, the TCA is a client. I wonder if Dr. Koop and Dr. Kervorkian will cross paths in the afterlife? Now wouldn't that be anRead More interesting conversation to monitor? Actually, I liked both of them. Both seemed to live by their strongly held principles and both dedicated their lives to help others in their own special way. And I hope God invited both into his heavenly kingdom. And the fact that Dr. Koop lived to the ripe old age of 96 tells me that he really knew his business. I bet he graduated in the top 10% of his medical school class. RIP, Dr. Koop. You were a darn good man. Say 'hi' to Dr. K for me!
Don Ingwerson March 7, 2013 at 02:44 pm
Thank you for your response to my article about Dr. Koop. In the article, I wanted to express myRead More appreciation for Dr. Koop's understanding and promotion of the fact that spirituality (prayer) was an important aspect in healing. His promotion of prayer had much to do with the efforts today in the use of alternative and complementary therapies.

I think meditation has it's benefits in healthcare situations. There's been considerable researchRead More published in Asia and the US on how relaxation techniques, mind-clearing and measured breathing benefits the human condition (stabilizing blood pressure, involuntary muscle activity, improving oxygen levels). I'm not convinced about the application of dogmatic prayer though, which from my observation as a former Christian (Lutheran) tends to have a more petitional aspect to it, like "Please God give me my right leg back" or praying to Jesus Christ to "please rehydrate me and stop the pain!" all the while an IV of saline in installed and a nurse has just injected 10 cc's of dilaudid. This just seems rather ridiculous to me. Then again Allah, Yahweh and Hanuman (Indian monkey god) and the 18 other major Gods in modern times seem to be remarkably good at curing eczema and a skinned knee. Maybe I'm the only one that find it amusing that the phone never rings anymore for Apollo, Zeus or Jupiter. I think C. Everett Koop's comment about spirituality was directed more to doctors, who make errors that can impact a patient's life forever. He seems to support spirituality in the face of our crude and obvious knowledge limitations and capabilities to cure as human beings.

The media seems to be more focused on the controversy rather than the tragedy. Instead of focusingRead More on the dangers of substance abuse and the health risks, they have turned it around to make it into unnecessary drama to try and make it more "newsworthy". Dr. Drew has attempted to do a positive thing with his work and Celebrity Rehab, and the second the media got the chance, they were willing to rip it apart and make it out to be something it wasn't at all. It's sad that we can't seem to report on the real issues. -Matt Lardner (a student of Dr. King)

Mindy McCready's death is not Dr. Drew's fault. She was an addict with a terrible, progressiveRead More disease. Yes, she tried to get help through rehab, be it Celebrity Rehab, court ordered rehab, or voluntary rehab. Rehab is not a cure all above all, it is just a first step to a long journey in recovery. There is not an addict alive who can be cured in a 28 day program! It is a lifelong process. Most people who try rehab do and will relapse, and more than once! The addict must want to change their life, nobody can force and addict to quit. This can take years! It doesn't have to, but more times than not is does. There is hope for recovery, and their are many people who have overcome their debilitating drug and alcohol addictions. The disease is conquerable, and treatment does work. Again, the addicted person has to want this more than ANYTHING else in the entire world. They have to work on it everyday, every month, every moment. It is not easy, it can be done. Mindy McCready had not been Dr. Drew's patient for at least 3 years! How can he be held accountable? Tragically for Mindy, her boyfriend committed suicide just a month prior and then her children were taken away! These circumstances would be most overwhelming for anyone! Most likely, Mindy had become clinically depressed on top of her addiction. Clinical depression and addiction combined can be a very deadly force. Rest in peace, dear Mindy. We love you.

Now 'Just Us'... Weeks ago, 'Jac' made great pains to instruct his respondents that this is 'hisRead More blog', each time he shares his sycophantic musings within his ideology... this time, revamped into the label of 'satire'. The tag-line for this article stated, in reference 'Jac'... "Writer/Author/Photographer" "A satirical view of Republican political positions, in answer to the President's State of the Union speech."... this alone, negates the need to address or "challenge the assertions of the blog", especially when the first line of the satire is based in obvious lie. Uh oh! the tag line says it is 'satire' rather than his sniping against his foes. "bring down the government"??? I think the left, has that corner nailed down 'fairly' tight and find satire is convoluted to utilize... considering the Constitutional crisis that is being created by the 'change' he ('Jac') apparently believes in. 'Jac's equally apparent need to control - hiding in satire, then entreating intelligent conversation while castigating his opponents is rolled in his judgements. I am glad, he does not seriously care, as it makes the pointless nonsense more palatable to read. I'm just ecstatic! 'Jac' is now calling his recurring righteous indignant view - satire.

Martin, you hit the nail right on the head. Restrictor plate racing and spec cars have taken theRead More engineering to a different place than originally intended by NASCAR. You don't have Smokey building 5/8 cars, Maurice Petty breathing on the engines in a way that really upset NASCAR. I would like them going back to cars based on actual production cars with engines matching the manufacturer. Today it is a corporation devoted to earning money and not highlighting the cars and the people who build and develop them.

Arthur, Johnson may have killed a version of that bill in the 50's, but he signed another versionRead More into law in 1964 and then said to an aide "We have lost the south for an entire generation." He underestimated the racists hold on the South, clearly. I never said Reagan wasn't elected by a majority of this country and then re-elected. If you think making a deal with Iran to hold the hostages until after the election makes one inspired...if you think running guns from the basement of the White House is a mark of greatness... It's interesting you chose to pick on a throw away line of mine, rather than try to refute my claim that you're asking me to buy an orange but selling me an apple. I would have tried to refute that the Republican party hasn't changed. Operative word there is "tried."

If the CPUC stopped dragging it's Bureaucratic feet by raising the fiscal qualificationRead More "bar" a huge number of additional ratepayers would qualify for energy upgrades which would help US all use less energy! We all have paid into an Upgrade Account that has many of Millions of dollars in it which is just collecting interest because the CPUC is limiting its use, which is also great for Edison because they make more profits on everyone that are not energy efficient!... Nuclear energy looks great in a spreadsheet, millions of eV per gram. Along came the atomic age andRead More parents were buying glow-in-the-dark toys for their kids. Oh, thank you, Deanne. Very interesting and helpful information. The cost of a 30-day inpatentRead More enrollment was not as steep as I thought it would be. And that goes in favor of the BFC for keeping the rates down. Years ago I recall a friend paid something like $25,000. However, he didn't need the medically supervised detox. And it really seemed to help him. But I thought it was called a 28-day program back then, not a 30-day program? Maybe they added 2 days? Since inflation has doubled the cost of most things since then I expected a much higher fee than $32,000. That's quite a bit of money to most people but probably well worth it if it helps someone beat an addiction and save their relationships and possibly their very lives. Years ago insurance used to be pretty good about covering the costs. Maybe they've cut their coverage back a bit over the years. Nice of you to respond. Thanks again.
