Briefing RSM, Sept. 6: Football Showdowns, Hockey Announcement

What's coming up and going down in Rancho Santa Margarita and the surrounding area. 

• Coto de Caza and Las Flores will be among the items of intense interest next week when the county agency known as LAFCO takes another look at unincorporated areas of Orange County and creates a vision for south O.C. Rancho Mission Viejo and Ladera Ranch will also get a close look-see.

• High school football ratchets up the intensity. The greatest improvement in the season takes place between Game 1 and Game 2, and for most local teams, this weekend is their second game. Santa Margarita Catholic plays host to perennial national power Las Vegas Bishop Gorman at Saddleback College, but there's another big game locally, too: Trabuco Hills plays host to Newport Harbor. They aren't alone: Tesoro plays host to Moreno Valley Rancho Verde, and Mission Viejo plays host to Corona Santiago.

• A Capistrano Unified School District all-star team is essentially the district's entry this year into the Anaheim Ducks High School League, which will double in size. The Capo Coyotes will take players from all the CUSD schools. The Santa Margarita Catholic team is the current national champion.
