Hand Over the Kittens, Rancho Kids Are Smart, Whale Watching

The following is stuff around town and Orange County that's interesting and useful.

1. Weird; there are all these stray cats around, but kittens seem to be a hot commodity. Two local organizations -- Forever Home Cat Rescue in Orange County and No Kill Los Angeles are aiming to help them out. Check the links for more info.

2. Santa Margarita Catholic baseball's Tony Bone will go on to play for Saddleback College. As a varsity athlete, Bone played a crucial role as the starting outfielder for Santa Margarita Catholic’s varsity baseball team. Bone also has two years of varsity experience with the football team.

3. Get out of town and take your date to the Dana Point Food and Wine Festival this Saturday. It starts at noon and there's, well... Food and wine.

4. Speaking of Dana Point, whale watchers aboard Captain Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Watching Safari are having very up-close encounters with lunge feeding blue whales, the largest known animals to have ever lived on earth. Check out trips and footage here.

5. Also, you Rancho Santa Margarita parents will be happy to know that your kids are better than kids in the rest of the state. No, seriously -- according to standardized test results for 2013 just released this week, Saddleback Valley Unified students did better than the California average by 15 points in English and kicked butt in other subjects too.
