Have a Safe 4th of July with Tips from ReadyOC

Summer is the perfect time of year to take advantage of the hot weather and enjoy fireworks and BBQs with friends and family. But are you prepared if a stray firework or BBQ causes a brush fire near your home or where you have gathered?

ReadyOC, an Orange County public service campaign aimed at educating and empowering the Orange County community to better prepare for any for any emergency, recommends the following if you are in an area near fireworks: 

  • Select and inspect your home display area in the daylight hours

  • Clear away debris and combustible

  • Your viewing area should be at least 20 feet away from the firework display are

  • Display area should be out of the public right of way

  • Keep streets clear for emergency vehicles

  • Protect our oceans by clearing fireworks debris from streets

  • Use a piece of drywall or sheetrock to protect pavement or grass area

  • Have a water source, like the garden hose, nearby

  • Keep a water filled bucket ready for spent fireworks

  • Submerge the spent fireworks and allow for cooling completely before disposing in the trash receptacle

  • An adult must be present at all times during fireworks discharge

    What can you do to prevent the chance that a BBQ can make your summer barbecue memorable for all the wrong reasons? ReadyOC suggests that you remember these tips:

    • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors
    • The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches
    • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill
    • Never leave your grill unattended and keep children and pets away from grilling area
    • Make sure everyone knows to Stop, Drop and Roll in case a piece of clothing does catch fire. Call 911 or your local emergency number if a burn warrants serious medical attention
