405 Freeway to Shut Down in Both Directions This Week

Nighttime travelers will have to use detours Wednesday and Thursday nights.

The San Diego Freeway (405) will be completely closed down Wednesday and Thursday nights following several evenings of partial closures.

From midnight to 5 a.m. on Wednesday and Thursday nights, both directions of the freeway will be shut down between Valley View Street and Seal Beach Boulevard as part of the Orange County Transportation Authority’s three and a half-year $277 million West County Connector Project.

Drivers heading north on the 405 should exit Westminster Boulevard head west, making a right on Seal Beach Boulevard to the 405.  Drivers heading south on the 405 should exit Seal Beach Boulevard, turning right onto Seal Beach Boulevard and left onto Westminster Boulevard to the 405.

It’s the first time the freeway will be entirely closed for the project, but partial closures will also create traffic headaches for nighttime drivers throughout the next week.

  • From Sunday through Thursday, four lanes on each side of the San Diego (405) between Westminster Boulevard and Seal Beach Boulevard will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. At least one lane will be open on each side of the freeway, but expect the lane reductions to slow down the flow of traffic significantly.
  • The southbound westbound 22 to the northbound 405 connector will be entirely closed from midnight to 5 a.m. from Sunday through Thursday.
  •  The southbound 405 to the eastbound 22 connector will also be closed Sunday through Thursday from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
