About 2,500 Celebrate New Year's Event

Despite cold weather, residents enjoy food and early-evening fun before Rancho Santa Margarita rings in the new year.

Rancho Santa Margarita's 12th annual Celebrating Friends and Family New Year's Eve event drew an estimated 2,500 to the Civic Plaza and Central Park on Monday.

Attendees were a hearty group as temperatures dipped from 55 degrees at its 5 p.m. start to 48 degrees by its end four hours later.

Those who braved the temps were comprised mostly of residents of RSM—and their friends and family—who were witness to magician Steve Spellman, BMX stunt riders, artwork, music by The 5150s and some giant bounce-house type fun. Local vendors, including Patch, also attended, providing free games and trinkets for children—or adults.
