Big Surprises on Today's Pages

AOL buys the Huffington Post, and there's some shocking news from the Orange County Health Care Agency.

1. The purchase of the Huffington Post by AOL seemed to catch a lot of people by surprise. Arianna Huffington —which owns Patch—and was then made president and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group under whose umbrella Patch was placed. Who says you can't have your cake and eat it, too?

2. A big surprise about life expectancy in Rancho Santa Margarita. Residents here no doubt enjoy some of the finest quality of life in Orange County. So why do residents live less, on average, than citizens of almost every city in the county? We'll have this must-read story later in the morning.

3. If you didn't get a chance to check out Patch on Sunday—statistically, you were watching the Super Bowl instead—it might be worthwhile to check out some tips about finger foods and snacks. Although aimed at the Super Bowl partier, had some good information for everyday food prep as well.

4. On this date in history, Feb. 7, 1964, the U.S. was invaded by the Beatles, who touched down in New York City to begin their first American tour; it hasn't been the same since. In 1970, Pistol Pete Maravich scored 69 points in a college basketball game for Louisiana State University and went on to average 43.6 points per game without the benefit of the three-point basket. In 1914, the "Little Tramp" character made famous by Charlie Chaplin debuted in a silent film, Kid Auto Races at Venice.

5. Celebrating birthdays today are Ashton Kutcher (33), Chris Rock (46), Garth Brooks (49), James Spader (51) and the late Buster Crabbe (1908), Sinclair Lewis (1885), Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867) and Charles Dickens (1812).
