Patriot Day was established in 2002 in commemoration of the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. The purpose of the essay contest is to help students maintain their writing and critical thinking skills over the summer break by encouraging them to take time to consider why it is important to honor and observe this day of remembrance.

“We encourage the youth of our city to share how they feel about patriotism and look forward to hearing the winning entries read on Patriot Day,” said Mayor Carol Gamble. “Today’s youth will be the leaders of tomorrow and will shape the future growth of Rancho Santa Margarita and our country.”
