Council News Will Continue Today

Emergency city council meeting today, deadline for temporary council seat, a frontrunner says he's not interested in a temp job. Also, Beatles and Candy.

1. Will it be a quiet, sparsely attended meeting, or will dozens of residents turn out today, 3 p.m., for the special city council meeting in which Tony Beall, Jerry Holloway and Steve Baric hear about their dwindling numbers. On the agenda is discussion of candidates who have applied (by the noon deadline) for the temporary council position held by Jesse Petrilla, who is training with the National Guard, and what the options are to replace with his unexpected resignation.

2. One person who said that , who would likely be the most qualified candidate should he have an interest. He cited business interests, and the conflict that would entail with the city, for keeping his distance. He kept his cards close to the vest when asked if he was interested in the permanent seat vacated by Thompson.

3. The Capo Unified School District is in the news—is there a day that it isn't?—because it wants to reopen negotiations with teachers even though the two sides reached a post-strike settlement that was supposed to resolve pay and class size issues through June 2012. Read .

4. On this day in history, 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt was sworn in as president for the first time; the 32nd commander in chief would rule the U.S. for 13 years until his death, leading to the passage of the 22nd Amendment that limited presidents to a maximum of two elected terms in office. In 1966, John Lennon said that Christianity "will vanish and shrink. ... We're more popular than Jesus now," a comment that would find its way into the American press five months later and take the shine off Beatlemania. In 1994, John Candy died of a heart attack at age 43.

5. Celebrating birthdays today are Patricia Heaton (53), soccer heartthrob Landon Donovan (29), Patsy Kensit (43), Paula Prentiss (73), Yes co-founder and bassist Chris Squire (63), Metallica vocalist and bassist Jason Curtis Newsted, and Chaz Bono (42), who was born the daughter of Sonny and Cher. Also the late composer Antonio Lucio Vivaldi (1678), who is 333 today; Knute Rockne (1888), who wanted to win one for the Gipper; and inventor Garrett Morgan (1877), who gave us the three-position traffic signal.
