Crafts Return, Tragedy, and CUSD 'Harmony'

4. On this day in history, March 25, 1911, a fire in the Triangle Shirtwaist Company factory in New York City killed 145 workers, mostly because exits were locked or impassable; the tragedy led to laws and regulations that improved safety conditions for factory workers.  In 1965, Martin Luther King Jr., led a march of 25,000 demonstrators to the state capital in Montgomery, AL, to demand voting rights for black Americans. In 1983, "Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever" aired on television, and Michael Jackson introduced much of the world to the moonwalk. In 1994, the last U.S. troops pulled out of Somalia, bringing a failed end to Operation Restore Hope.

5. Celebrating birthdays today are musical heavyweights Elton John (63) and Aretha Franklin (69). Others born today are Anita Bryant (70), Gloria Steinem (77), Bonnie Bedelia (64), Sarah Jessica Parker (45), Paul Michael Glaser (67), athletes Sheryl Swoopes (39) and Danica Patrick (28), and Eileen Ford (89), who founded the famous Ford Modeling Agency in 1946. Among those who have passed are Howard Cosell (1920) and 1959 Oscar winner Simone Signoret (1921).
