Date Set, Match Lost, Tsunami Passes

Cpl. Jordan Stanton's funeral is on March 17. Santa Margarita likely lost its grip on No. 1. The tsunami is mild in South OC. Also, a big wave of criticism over the Dixie Chicks.

1. A funeral for Marine Cpl. Jordan R. Stanton of Rancho Santa Margarita at San Francisco Solano Catholic Church. His family and Stanton's body arrived in Orange County on Friday and received a 100-motorcycle escort by the Patriot Guard Riders to the O'Connor Mortuary in Laguna Hills.

2. Santa Margarita Catholic may have been ranked the No. 1 boys' volleyball team in the nation, but no one said it was going to be easy. The Eagles lost a three-game pool play match on Friday to Clovis Buchanan, 25-23, 23-25, 18-16, in the Best of the West tournament in Poway. If SMCHS plans to hang on to the ranking—and they probably won't anyway—they need to come back through and win the event, and will probably need to avenge the loss to Buchanan. 3. As of Friday night, in the wake of the earthquake in Japan and resultant tsunami. Anyone heading to the beach is urged to use caution; even though the waves may not look severe, there are dangerous currents under those waves.

4. On this day in history, March 12, 1933, eight days after his inauguration and with the U.S. at the lowest point in the depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt used simple language and illustrations in his first fireside chat over the radio and explained why he closed the banks for a day. In 1912, the Girl Guides formed in Savannah, GA; it later became the Girl Scouts of the United States of America. Got cookies? In 1947, President Harry S. Truman asked for U.S. assistance for Greece and Turkey to stop the spread of communism there; the Truman Doctrine as it was called was considered the official declaration of the Cold War. In 2003, a few months after singing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl and just before the American invasion of Iraq, the backlash against the Dixie Chicks began when singer Natalie Maines' concert quote was only partially reported in concert review by a British newspaper; the full quote (with the omission in italics) was "Just so you know, we're on the good side with y'all. We do not want this war, this violence. And we're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas."

5. Agent 99 turns 79 today as "Get Smart" actress Barbara Feldon celebrates a birthday. Also celebrating today are James Taylor (63), Liza Minelli (65), Al Jarreau (71), former Atlanta mayor Andrew Young (79), playwright Edward Albee (83), jazz musician Frank Catalano (33) and Darryl Strawberry (49). Others were the late Jack Kerouac (1922) and Gordon MacRae (1921).
