Thursday brings the traditional start of the weekend—at least in our heads. So here are just a few ideas of fun events around town to get your planning off to a running start.

Why go: Help raise money for Tesoro’s music programs. Ball Park will donate 20 percent of sales when the Music Boosters are mentioned.

Why go: A bored wife gets into all kinds of adventures when she hitchhikes while on vacation.

Why go: Several mariachi groups from around Southern California will battle it out to see who is the best of the best.

Where/When: Starr Ranch, 100 Bell Canyon Road, Trabuco Canyon; Saturday 10 a.m. to Sunday, noon
Why go: Learn all about amphibians and reptiles and techniques to study them. Campers will also participate in animal surveys on Starr Ranch.
