Grab 'n Go Kids Planner: Bargain Waterslide Rides, Dollar Movies and Reading Fun

Looking for ways to keep the kids busy these last few weeks of summer? Check out our planner; we've hunted down the best bargain fun in OC this week.

PRETEND CITY FAMILY FUN FRIDAY

Where/When: Pretend City, 29 Hubble, Irvine. Friday, August 19, 11-2 p.m.

Why Go: Kids toddler age through 6 years will enjoy this special event put on by Read OC Family. They will focus on early reading as they enjoy two stories, All by Myself by popular children’s author Mercer Mayer and Leo the Late Bloomer by Robert Kraus. A skill building activity will follow; it includes a shoe tying project in which children get to make their own shoe and then practice lacing and tying it.

Pricing: Event is included in museum ticket; infants 12 months and younger are free, children and adult tickets are $11 each.

MARINE HUMVEE DISPLAY DAY

Where/When: , 30031 Santa Margarita Parkway, Rancho Santa Margarita. Sunday, August 21, 9-4 p.m.

Why Go: Bring the whole family down to check out two impressive Humvee gun trucks, displayed by the Second Battalion Marines. This event is designed to build a relationship between the community and the adopted 2/5 Marine Battalion. Kids will enjoy having their faces painted in camouflage colors as well.

Pricing: FREE

CARLOAD NIGHT AT WILD RIVERS

Where/When: Wild Rivers, 8770 Irvine Center Drive, Irvine. Monday, August 22, 4-8 p.m.

Why Go: The rumor seems to be true: Wild Rivers is closing its doors for good this year. Take advantage of the last carload night of the year and bring the whole family down for some good, wet fun at a bargain price you can’t resist. Passengers must each have their own seatbelt in car.

Pricing: $70 per carload up to 8 people; $10 for parking.

DOLLAR MOVIES

Where/When: Woodbridge Movies 5, 4626 Barranca Parkway, Irvine. Times vary.

Why Go: Tired of paying $10 to see a children’s flick? Grab the kids and head on down to this theater, where ten bucks will cover the whole family and maybe get you a dollar hot dog too. This week, check out Kung Fu Panda 2 in 3D and Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Arrive early for showings; this theater is the newest hot spot in town since the economy took a turn.

Pricing: $2/ticket, $1 on Tuesdays, 3D movies are $4.

ANGELS PLAYER AT OC ZOO

Where/When: OC Zoo, 1 Irvine Park Road, Orange. Saturday, August 20, 11-12:30 p.m.

Why Go: Angels pitcher Rich Thompson will make a special appearance at the OC Zoo with his wife Ashley and 1-year-old son Richard. Learn about his career in the Majors and take photos with him and the zoo animals. Children and adults who dress in Angels gear will receive free admission to the zoo and half price tickets to the Irvine Park Railroad.

Pricing: $5/parking, $2 zoo admission (3 and under are free)  or free zoo admission with Angels gear.
