This weekend, there's no excuse to stay inside and field claims of boredom. We've rounded up the most exciting events going on in your neighborhood and beyond.

Where/When: Lowes Department Store, 30481 Avenida De Las Flores, Rancho Santa Margarita. Saturday, May 7, 10 a.m.

Why Go: Dad can browse the store while kids participate in this fun and free event. This weekend, kids can make a heart flower vase for Mom this Mother’s Day. Workshops run every other week.

THRONE OF FIRE RELEASE PARTY

Why Go: Move over Harry Potter! This new series by Rick Riordan, author of the popular Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, is all the buzz between elementary aged kids. Carter Kane and his sister Sadie find themselves in trouble when the gods of Ancient Egypt are unleashed in the modern world in this fast paced, exciting fantasy series. Kids ages 8-12 are welcome to attend the release party at the bookstore this weekend. Call to RSVP.

ORANGE COUNTY MEAL MARATHON

Where/When: COTN Meal Packaging Center, 22432 Avenida Empresa, Rancho Santa Margarita. Saturday, May 7, 8:30-10:30 a.m.

Why Go: This is a great way for the whole family to get involved in helping others. Bring your friends down to the Children of the Nations Meal Packaging Center this weekend and make a significant difference in meeting the needs of destitute and orphaned children. The assembly-line style of work needed to run ingredients, package, seal, color boxes and load the truck is for all ages. A donation of $10 per person or $25 per family will cover the cost of ingredients and delivery of meals. Your investment will make a big difference in the lives of these children in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The day will also include T-shirts, snacks, a canned food drive for OC food banks, games and learning activities.

MOVIE UNDER THE STARS

Where/When: Irvine Great Park, Sand Canyon and the 5 freeway Saturday, May 7, 8 p.m.

Why Go: The whole family will enjoy watching the smash hit cartoon Despicable Me on the big screen at the Great Park Lawn this weekend. Bring your lawn chairs and sit under the stars with a tub of homemade popcorn and get ready to have fun and laugh.

SOKA UNIVERSITY’S ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL

Where/When: Soka University, Aliso Viejo. Saturday, May 7, 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Why Go: This multi-cultural event for the whole family is an educational and fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon.  Over 900 musicians and dancers will perform on three stages. International food, exhibitors, games, activities, art exhibition, ceramic sales and demos, children’s play area with Superslide and bounce house, and student project presentations will be available on site. This event is sponsored by the Orange County Imagination Celebration.

Pricing: Admission is free; parking on campus is $10. Food available from vendors for a nominal fee.
