Gym Dandy, Special Meeting, and Tesoro Tidbits

John Weyler ain't as young as he used to be, city council makes a logistics move, and Tesoro hopes to move up in the standings. Also, a big day for celebrity deaths, and ABBA!

1. An aging ex-sportswriter goes to the gym to work out. Is there anything good that can come from this, other than? John Weyler writes about weekend warriors, wives and what's on his iPod.

2. A request for an emergency city council meeting was made on Monday—at the exclusion of the mayor—and now , while freshman councilman Jesse Petrilla is in town on leave from training in the California Army National Guard. The other six candidates will be interviewed at the regularly scheduled meeting Aug. 13 when Mayor Tony Beall will be present but Petrilla won't. Jerry Holloway and Steve Baric will attend both meetings. The agenda for the meeting should be finalized today.

3. The Tesoro High softball  team has gotten off to a rough start, but coach Donn Munsell says there are improvements his team can make that will help it be competitive in the South Coast League. Win a banner and nobody cares what you did in nonleague play. Read Ted Apodaca's .

4. On this day in history, April 5, 1614, Pocahontas married John Rolfe, a union that ensured peace between the Powhatan Indian Confederacy and Jamestown settlers for a few years; Pocahontas died from smallpox in 1617 while on a trip to England, and Rolfe was killed by Indians in 1622 in Virginia. In 1968, the day after Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination, singer James Brown calmed potential rioters in Boston when the city broadcast his concert on the local public television station. In 1994, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar set the NBA scoring record held previously by Wilt Chamberlain. In 1955, Winston Churchill resigned.  In 1976, reclusive Howard Hughes died; he was 70. In 1994, troubled Kurt Cobain committed suicide. In 2008, gun-toting Charlton Heston died; he was 84. 

5. Agnetha Faltskog (61), the blonde voice in ABBA, celebrates a birthday today along with Gen. Colin Powell (74), and filmmaker Roger Corman (85). Plenty of legends were born on this date, including the late Gregory Peck (1916), Bette Davis (1908), Spencer Tracy (1900), Booker T. Washington (1856), Gale Storm (90) and the best Riddler of all, Frank Gorshin (1934).
