Hair, Dogs and the Scales of Justice

A couple of photo galleries highlight weekend activities in Rancho Santa Margarita, and sentencing is expected today for a convicted child molester. Also, go Gaga over Reba.

1. Sentencing is expected today for Scott Andrew Christensen, the after-school child-care worker convicted of molesting a boy he was babysitting. The Rancho Santa Margarita resident could face up to 10 years in prison.

2. The first of at least two galleries from the St. Baldrick's Foundation fundraiser Sunday at the community center can be . We should have another one on Thursday as part of our Viewfinder feature. Early estimates are that the community raised $125,000 to fight pediatric cancer. Among those who got their hair cut—albeit not all the way—was city councilman Steve Baric.

3. We also have a gallery from an event Saturday, presented by SAMLARC. Lots of pictures from Solana Park. It's a shame the weather couldn't have been a little bit better.

On this day in history, March 28, 1979, the Three-Mile Island nuclear power plant's Unit-2 reactor began overheating and the core came within about an hour of a complete meltdown—when temperature reaches 5,000 degrees; the threat passed, but there hasn't been a new nuclear power plant built in the U.S. since. In 1969, former general and president Dwight D. Eisenhower died at age 78. In 1958, "Father of the Blues" W.C. Handy died at age 85. In 1939, the Spanish Civil War ended. In 1920, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford married, 3 1/2 weeks after Pickford's divorce from actor Owen Moore; as a wedding gift, Fairbanks bought an estate in Beverly Hills dubbed Pickfair that had the city's first swimming pool. In 1776, San Francisco was founded by explorer Juan Batista de Anza and 247 colonists.

5. Celebrating birthdays today are songbirds Reba McEntire (56) and Lady Gaga (25). Others are Vince Vaughn (41), Dianne Wiest (63), Kate Gosselin (36), Julia Stiles (30) and Ken Howard (67), better known as "The White Shadow."
