Heroes of Every Type Get Highlighted Today

Cops, firefighters, moms, and the compassionate will get something out of today's Patch.

1. If you're a fan of cops or Engine 45 in Rancho Santa Margarita, you'll want to check out our slide show of the annual Law Enforcement and Firefighters Appreciation Awards Ceremony presented by the Mission Viejo Elks Lodge. With 40 photographs, it's . Pictured here is RSMs Deputy of the Year, Alan Villanueva, receiving his award. Another deputy, John Barbour, was recognized last month by American Legion Post 862.

2. Patch attended the fundraiser Tuesday at to help raise money for the RSM family of Diana Leung, an 18-year-old with inoperable brain cancer. We took some pictures, talked to some nice folks—including Diana's grandparents—and expect to have a gallery posted later this afternoon.

3. Throughout the day, RSM Patch will have content geared to moms who are looking to do things with their kids, and looking to get a break from their kids. Check back periodically.

4. There have been many incidents of kids throwing items at vehicles, and recently a water balloon hit a moving vehicle and shattered the windshield. That may not be the highlight of the , though: A TV was held hostage by a TV repairman. Seriously.

5. On this date in history, Feb. 16, 1923, archeologists opened the tomb of King Tut. In 1997, Jeff Gordon, 25, became the youngest winner of the Daytona 500; he also won in 1999 and 2005. In 1959, Fidel Castro was sworn in as Cuba's prime minister. Celebrating birthdays are John McEnroe (52), Ice-T (53) and LeVar Burton (54); also born on this date were Sonny Bono (1935) and Edgar Bergen (1903).

For What it's Worth: It's National Bird Feeding Month, and National Second-hand Wardrobe Week.  It's also Kyoto Protocol Day, which has to do with the reduction of greenhouse gases; surprisingly, it's the only "holiday" attached to Feb. 16.
