MLK Holiday: A ‘Day On, Not a Day Off’

Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only holiday declared as a national day of service. Here's how to find local volunteer opportunities.

When President Obama is sworn in for his second term on Monday, the nation will also be honoring Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement he led before his voice was silenced by an assassin’s bullet in 1968.

A federal holiday since 1983, Martin Luther King Jr. Day was later designated as a national day of service, the only holiday with that distinction. Just as King dedicated his life to serving communities struggling to overcome injustices, the holiday bearing his name is intended to be “a day on, not a day off.”

Projects big and small will be underway Monday all over the United States, with volunteers spending the day cleaning public parks, collecting clothes and food for needy families, visiting senior centers and other opportunities to give back to the community.

The Corporation for National and Community Service is the federal agency that has coordinated MLK Day projects since Congress declared it a national day of service in 1994. President Obama’s United We Serve community-service initiative has joined the agency in promoting the first holiday of the year as a day to give back.

Sorry, I don't read 'politifact' any more since it recently conceded that their "lie of the year' for 2012 turned out to be TRUE!!! hah. :^) I only read verified stuff, like the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office 6-mo investigation of Obama's BC and selective service registration card, both containing indisputable scientific and forensic evidentiary indication of being fraudulent. heh. Go look at the 1.5 hour presentation of the investigation's findings if you disbelieve me. heh. The proof is in the pudding. heh. Btw, here is the link showing the credibility, or lack thereof, of 'Politifact: http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/whoops-politifacts-lie-year-turns-out-be-true_696223.html Enjoy! heh. :^)

hey met00, instead of just tossing links up on the board with information that is unverifiable - why don't you simply answer my questions (one on one) or respond directly to the FACTS that I post like I do yours? You skeerd? I could post links all day long too. But it really serves no purpose if I fail to take your questions and claims - and respond to them one after another. The FACT is I backed you chumps into the corner so links is all you got left. heh. Be a man. Take my comments POINT BY POINT like I do yours. Put on your big boy pants for once. heh. ;^)

Btw, met00 - what don't you understand about Politifact CONCEDING that their 'lie of the year' for 2012 was actually TRUE??? Can't you read? They already CONCEDED and ADMITTED that they were wrong. heh. READ THE STATEMENT!!!! heh. My God. Are you that far in denial??? heh.
