Moms Talk: Candy Craze

Check out what other moms are chatting about this week and then put in your two cents!

QUESTION: My kids' friends devour their entire trick or treat stash in a day or two. My mother always limited us to a few pieces a day. Do I give in to the holiday fun or crack down on the sugar?

ANSWER: I knew a guy in grade school who emptied his entire sack after trick or treating and devoured it all in one sitting. He still complains about a stomach ache to this day. Halloween is just the beginning of the sugar madness that lasts throughout the rest of the year; why not spread it out? Unless you want multiple trips to the dentist and sugar highs that last past midnight, I suggest doling out their favorites every night after dinner or tossing one in their lunch bag (that is, after you pick out your favorites and stash them away, of course!).

The Great Pumpkin comes to our house every year. Pick the best 10 pieces and leave the rest for him... when he comes, he gobbles up the loot and spits out a toy! Or this year, Mad Libs... I ration the 10 pieces @ 1 per day, but they rarely get finished. :)- Karin F.

If your kids' friends live locally (meaning here in south OC), I have to say I'm honestly surprised that these friends would be allowed to eat all their candy in a day or two. Why? Almost every mom I know around her does indeed dole out the candy the way you do, at least for elementary school age kids. Maybe that changes when the kids get older, but I honestly can't think of any of my friends who would let their kids eat their candy all at once. Is it possible your son is exaggerating so that he can have more candy at once? Or maybe his friends are just bragging about something that isn't entirely true.
