Moms Talk: Is the Easter Bunny Real?

Check out what moms in your neighborhood are gabbing about this week, and then put in your two cents.

This week's quetion is relevant to the season.

Question: I'm afraid I've opened a can of worms with my 3-year old son. We visited the Easter bunny at the mall last week and then saw another bunny on our way home. I could sense the gears turning in his little inquisitive mind as he asked, "Mommy, is the Easter bunny really real?" I dodged the question, but it's only a matter of time before the Tooth Fairy and Santa Claus become part of the inquisition, too. I hate to burst his bubble. What should I do?

Answer: Ah, the long debated motherhood dilemma. To spoil the fun or spill the beans? I still remember exactly where I was standing (in my backyard next to the sandbox) when my best friend told me the tooth fairy was not real. This, after spending two years setting up traps with pots and pans to catch her! I was enraged at my friend, my mother and the Tooth Fairy (for not being real!). This is a question only you can answer for your child. Most adults believed in one of these characters at one point in time and we all got over it sooner or later (for me, later). One popular reply is "Only those who believe receive". Or another: "What do you think?" with a wink. In our house, we do one Santa gift (a bigger unwrapped one under the tree) and the rest are from Mom and Dad. (No need for Santa to get too much credit when we're the ones who pay the Visa bills, right?). I say keep the fun as long as you can, and if your son finds out the truth about the Easter bunny, console him with a basket of chocolate and keep the Easter spirit alive by focusing on the things that really matter: family and friends.
