Moms Talk: Mom and the Prom

Check out what other moms in your neck of the woods are chatting about this week and then give your two cents.

Q: Prom is just around the corner for my teenage daughter, and it's already turning into the wedding of the century. I realize this only happens once in a girl's lifetime, but how much do I give in? Three hundred dollar dresses, professional photo shoots and limo rides? How do I make this memorable for her without breaking the bank?

A: For my prom, I wore a "vintage" (a.k.a. Salvation Army dress)  that my date spilled Coke down during our pre-prom dinner at Taco Bell. Things have changed a bit since then. But this doesnt mean you have to break the bank to give your daughter a night to remember. One suggestion I hear around town? Set a budget ($250 or whatever it might be) and tell your daughter she can do whatever she wants with this amount. If she chooses to spend it all on a dress, so be it. Have a friend who's a photographer? Have them gather the kids together in a park or other pretty setting for some before prom pics. Try a beauty college for hair and make up; you'll save a fortune. As for limo rides, these seem to be increasingly popular not because they are fancy, but because they keep kids out of trouble. Couples pitch in for a ride, arrive safely at their destination and return safely without any temptation to sneak off and drink elsewhere. Assure your daughter you care about her night and want to make it special. She'll thank you later.
