Moms Talk: Pet Love or Pet Peeve?

Check in with moms like you every week to see what they're chatting about, then put in your two cents. This week, the big Pet Dilemma is in the spotlight. Got some advice for this mom?

Q: My kids are begging for a pet, but I'm not sure our family is ready for one yet. I spend enough time cleaning up messes all day; the idea of potty accidents and pet dander doesn't thrill me. Plus, there's the expense—vaccinations, food, etc. I think it could be a good lesson in responsibility for my kids, but my fear is that I'll end up doing all the work in the end!

A: This is a great question. The big Pet Dilemma seems to come up in every family at some point in time. You didn't say how old your kids were, and this could make a difference in your decision. Younger kids might do better starting with a goldfish, hamster, etc. Older kids can better take on a dog, cat or larger animal. Pets can be a great addition to a home, but every family is different. Just as some parents prefer only two children, others prefer a big brood. Finding the right pet for your family is the most crucial part of the decision. Pets can be a great way to teach responsibility, as kids take turns feeding, walking and caring for the animal. It can also serve as a tough but important life lesson when the pet passes away. Just some food for thought!
