Moms Talk: Road Trip Ruckus

Check out what other moms are chatting about this summer and then put in your two cents.

Question: Since airfares are up, my husband suggested taking the ol' minivan on the road with our three kids this summer. The last time we tried road trippin', I almost lost my mind. What do other parents do to stay sane on long trips?

Answer: There are these tiny things called flasks ... no, all kidding aside, road tripping can be one of the most enjoyable, or horrific experiences with children, depending on how you prepare. If you haven't invested in a portable or built in DVD player yet, I highly suggest you do. It will buy you literally hours of time. But when the kids have blown through every Disney movie they own, the fighting will inevitibly begin. My suggestion? Buy a small plastic box with a lid (shoebox size) for each child and fill it with non-messy snacks (dried fruit, nuts, jelly beans, etc), a water bottle or juice box, drawing supplies, handheld games and a surprise or two. Include a plastic bag for trash (or barf, should it occur). Another way to keep kids busy? Play the Hundred Things Game. Kids have to make a list (preferably together) of 100 things to look for on the road trip (train crossing sign, tractor, red convertible, etc) and then check them off as you go along. A final thought? And don't laugh. Those little plastic porta potties come in very handy. Just sayin'.
