Lezak, 35, who grew up in Irvine, specializes in the 50 and 100 meter freeestyle races, and he owns long course world records in the 400 free and medley relays. A three-time Olympian, Lezak hopes to win gold again in the 2012 Summer Games in London.

He is most famously known for his anchor leg in the 2008 Olympics that allowed Michael Phelps to win the most unlikely of his unprecedented eight gold medals. Trailing Frenchman Alain Bernard—at the time the world record holder in the 100 meters—Lezak swam the fastest 100 meter split in history, 46.06 seconds, to help the Americans break the world record by 3.99 seconds. It was a defining performance for Lezak, who has won seven Olympic medals, six of them in relays.
