Olympic Swimming Hero on Fruits, Phelps and What's Next

Jason Lezak, the swimmer whose amazing anchor leg gave the U.S. a world record in the 2008 Summer Games, was in Rancho Santa Margarita on Saturday signing autographs and talking about healthy eating.

Jason Lezak, who's extraordinary anchor leg helped the U.S. set a world record in the 4x100 in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games, thought that being a star was just about swimming. But what Lezak learned over the years, as he transitioned from boy to man, is that there are a lot of incidental things that come along with representing your country at its highest athletic level.

One of those incidental things at Pavilions in Rancho Santa Margarita, where Lezak signed autographs and talked about the importance of fruits and vegetables in a child's diet as part of the Lunchbox Winners program. Talking to kids is one of the things he never thought would be part of his duties back when he was attending Irvine High and swimming for the Novaquatics. But it's one of the things he enjoys these days.

Watch the video to hear Lezak talk about what's important, and what Michael Phelps gave him—or didn't—after an extraordinary anchor leg provided Phelps the opportunity to win an unprecedented eight goal medals.
