Bush-League Tennis, Best Breakfasts and a Blotto Blotter

President George H.W. Bush took tennis advice from a South County coach; Patch picks breakfasts; and alcohol and sprinting don't mix. Plus, a video of birthday boy Marvin Gaye showing what he can do without music (young wannabes take note).

1. Even if you normally have no need to read Matt Garvey's , it's worth checking this week—especially if you're a Republican (is there anyone in RSM who isn't?). Garvey talks to A.G. Longoria, who instructed the first George Bush in tennis—while he was the sitting president. In addition to the interesting story—you have to scroll down to find it—there's a video offering some of the advice Longoria gave to the former president.

2. Police were on the lookout the other day for a man who was passed out against the side of a pickup truck. Apparently he was originally passed out in the road but decided that was a bad idea. So he got up and began running—which also might not have been a good idea in his condition. It's part of a  featuring men harassing people for money (they weren't the only ones), men flirting, men taking pictures of a 10-year-old outside a fitness club (creepy) and a suspicious vehicle (be on the lookout for a Crown Victoria).

3. Did you see the Patch Picks on Friday? It's our weekly look at best bets in and around Rancho Santa Margarita. This week, . If you know other places for outstanding breakfasts, be sure to comment—there's nothing like sharing the good news with your neighbors.

4. On this day in history in 1513, Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon discovered Florida while looking for the Fountain of Youth. Maybe that explains why there are so many retirees there today. In 1917, President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress for a Declaration of War the day after a U.S. steamer was sunk by German torpedoes; four days later, America was part of WWI. In 1992, mob boss John Gotti was convicted of murder. In 2005, Pope John Paul II died; he was 84.

5. Celebrating birthdays today are Emmylou Harris (64), Leon Russell (69), character actress Linda Hunt (66) and Ron "Horshack" Palillo (57), who at one time was as famous as another student on "Welcome Back Kotter," John Travolta. Others who were born on this day were the late Marvin Gaye (1939), Jack Webb (1920), Alec Guinness (1914), Buddy Ebsen (1908) and Hans Christian Anderson (1805).
