RSM Gets Less Than a Quarter Inch of Rain

1. Although rain is expected to be light the remainder of the day, thunderstorms are expected through tonight from the storm cell moving through the Southland. It could sound worse than it is. Rancho Santa Margarita received 0.15 of an inch of rain.

2. The city council received its advance packet for its meeting scheduled for next Wednesday, and included was the RSM staff report on the likelihood of councilman Jesse Petrilla being able to serve nearly four months at tank school in Fort Knox while continuing his council duties. .

On this date in history, Feb. 19, 1847, the first rescuers reached the snow-trapped Donner Party in the Sierra Nevada Mountains; by the time all were rescued in late April, there were 45 survivors and 44 dead, including those eaten to ensure the survival of the others. In 1945, U.S. Marines invaded Iwo Jima, which was protected by 21,000 Japanese soldiers; by the end of the first day, there were 550 dead and more than 1,800 injured. In 1878, Thomas Edison patented the phonograph.

5. Celebrating birthdays today are Smokey Robinson (71), Jeff Daniels (56), Seal (48) and Justine Bateman (45), who portrayed 15-year-old Mallory in "Family Ties." Also born on this date were the late Lee Marvin (1924), Margaux Hemingway (1955) and Nicolaus Copernicus (1473), who asserted the earth—and everything else—revolved around the sun.
