4. On this day in history, March 29, 1971, Lt. William Calley, whose platoon allegedly killed 200 innocent civilians, was found guilty of premeditated murder in the My Lai massacre; exactly two years later, 1973, the last American combat troops pulled out of Vietnam. In 1929, Herbert Hoover had a telephone installed in the Oval Office. In 1932, comedian Jack Benny made his radio debut. In 1951, Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were convicted as spies who gave atomic secrets to the Soviet Union. In 1982, nine villages were destroyed and about 2,000 people were killed by the earthquake and volcanic eruption of El Chichon in southern Mexico; the 4,500 foot mountain was cut down to less than 700 feet.

5. Among those born on this day were the 10th president, John Tyler (1790), the great pitcher Cy Young (1867), the great singer Pearl Bailey and Wal-Mart founder Sam Walton (both 1918). Others are Elle Macpherson (47), Lucy Lawless (43) and Jennifer Capriati (35) and former British Prime Minister John Major (68).
