Elizabeth Zarkos of Lake Forest has a passion for horses, and a heart for caring for them. That led her in 2004 to create the Hanaeleh Horse Rescue in Trabuco Canyon, where she spends her spare time mucking stalls, training horses, tending wounds and teaching volunteers so that, hopefully, all equines will find a loving home.
Zarkos is a teacher by trade who works with teens who don't fit the norm, a bit like herself growing up. Still single, the 37-year-old's focus is on others—primarily her students and the horses.
“Horses are my thing,” Zarkos says. “Everyone should have their thing. If everyone would pick one thing, just one, and did it to the best of their ability – I mean went all in, put all your passion and love into it – the world will be an amazing place.”
