Social Media, Shutouts and City Council

Soccer favorites come up empty, friends aren't at a loss for commenting about Jordan Stanton, and City Council says no to a special election. Also, what we wouldn't give for a Chuck Norris-Osama Bin Laden throwdown.

1. Marine Cpl. Jordan R. Stanton's body was returned to the U.S. on Monday but on Wednesday his friends paid tribute to him through social media, particularly Facebook. Check .

2. Santa Margarita Catholic's soccer season came to an abrupt end as the top-seeded Eagles were beaten in the semifinals of the Southern Regional playoffs by Coronado, 2-0. Most of the credit goes to the Coronado goalkeeper, who put together a highlight tape in shutting out the Eagles and Notre Dame-bound standout Lauren Bohaboy. Read .

3. The RSM City Council met Wednesday for its regularly scheduled meeting and determined that for Gary Thompson, who resigned his position on the council last week. There were 17 applicants in the eight days that the city floated another position as temporary replacement for Jesse Petrilla, who is training with the California National Guard for almost four months. A press release Thursday will provide details, but the application is due by noon on March 22, and the term will run through 2012.

4. On this date in history, March 10, 1959, fearing their spiritual leader would be kidnapped by Chinese forces, about 300,000 Tibetans formed a human wall around the summer palace of the Dalai Lama to prevent his departure; when fighting broke out 11 days later, the Dalai Lama had escaped to India  but tens of thousands of his supporters were killed. In 1969, James Earl Ray pleaded guilty to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.In 1970, the Army accused Capt. Ernest Medina and four soldiers with crimes associated with the My Lai massacre two years earlier. In 1988, singer Andy Gibb—whose first three releases all reached No. 1 before he turned 21—died at age 30 from a heart weakened by years of cocaine abuse. In 1876, speech was transmitted over the telephone for the first time by Alexander Graham Bell: "Mr. Watson, come here. I want you." 

5. Carrie Underwood (28) celebrates a birthday today, along with John Hamm and Timbaland (both 40), Prince Edward and Jasmine Guy (both 47), and humorist Bob Greene (64) and Boston guitarist Tom Scholz (both 64). Also celebrating today are Sharon Stone (53) and music producer Rick Rubin (48)—who went from producing hip hop to breathing new life into an aging Johnny Cash's career. And finally, two guys who we'd love to see in the same room: Chuck Norris (71) and Osama Bin Laden (54), provided he was man enough to show up.
