SPCA Offers Tips on Protecting Pets During Holiday Weekend

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles  offered some tips on keeping pets from becoming lost or injured during the July 4 holiday weekend.

For curious pets, backyard barbecues may not be as fun as they are for their human companions, according to the spcaLA. Among other tips, the organization says to keep alcoholic beverages, lighter fluids, matches and insect repellents like citronella candles away from animals because each can be toxic or deadly when ingested or inhaled.

Also, use sunscreens intended for animals and remember that some foods can be toxic for dogs such as chocolate, onions, tomatoes, avocados and grapes. Cooked bones can splinter and be fatal.

Other tips offered by the organization:

• Microchip dogs and cats and make sure they have current ID tags at all times.
• Keep pets safe and secure inside the home. Loud noises from fireworks can cause a dog to jump a fence and run away from home or force a cat to hide for days. Keeping your pets indoors and secure will also protect them from what can happen on dangerous streets.
• If you're hosting a party, keep your animals in a cool, well-ventilated room with a radio playing softly in the background. Include your pet's favorite toys and pet bed for comfort. Do this as well as if you are going out but your pet is staying home.
• Do not tie up your dog outside to keep him from escaping. Loud noises can frighten your pooch and make him more likely to attempt to flee. Dogs can seriously injure themselves or even die trying to escape.
• Educate children not to scare pets with firecrackers or sparklers.
