Lots of sports-related notes, along with good advice as the clock springs forward by an hour. Also, a big day for dogs and a particular duck.

1. Santa Margarita Catholic probably won't be No. 1 in the nation at the beginning of next week——but the Eagles put in a good account for themselves on Friday and Saturday at the Best of the West boys' volleyball tournament in Poway. After losing a close pool play match in three games to Clovis Buchanan on Friday, the Eagles responded in the 16-team bracket portion of the invitational Saturday by reaching the championship match. Unfortunately for SMCHS, it was beaten by Manhattan Beach Mira Costa, 25-22, 25-22. Maybe the most notable game of the day was the first game of a second-round victory over Corona del Mar, 34-36, 26-24, 15-10. They played a total of 70 points. Wow.

2. Sunday is the beginning of Daylight Saving Time. Did you remember to advance your clock forward an hour? Even if you didn't, and you walked into church as it was ending, , which recommends changing the batteries in smoke alarms whenever we spring forward or fall back. A smoke alarm is one item you don't want having bad batteries.

3. Lauren Oosdyke, a former basketball player at Santa Margarita, has been part of the solution at Northern Colorado, where she earned all-conference recognition and helped the team tie for first place in the Big Sky Conference. 4. On this date in history, March 13, 1942, the U.S. Army introduced the K-9 Corps, beginning the training of dogs for military service. In 1965, Eric Clapton left the Yardbirds. In 1868, impeachment proceedings began against President Andrew Johnson, who succeeded Lincoln, for his violation of the Tenure of Office Act; a two-thirds majority for conviction failed by one vote in the Senate, but more than five decades later the U.S. Supreme Court vindicated Johnson by ruling the Tenure of Office Act unconstitutional. In 1781, William Hershel discovered Uranus, the seventh planet from the sun. In 1884, standard time was adopted throughout the U.S. In 1925, Tennessee outlawed the teaching of evolution, which paved the way for the Scopes Monkey Trial.

5. Dana Delaney (55) is among those celebrating birthdays today. Also William H. Macy (61), Neil Sedaka (72), baseball player Will Clark (47), U2 bass player Adam Clayton (51), and actors Emile Hirsch (26) and Rachael Bella (27). Also born on this date 100 years ago was the late L. Ron Hubbard (1911), which is no doubt being celebrated by Tom Cruise.
