Troubled Teens, Hopeful Candidates, Running Stars

Take a closer look at a story that helped launch Patch, as well as candidates who hope to lead Rancho Santa Margarita. Also, Brando makes a statement though someone else.

1. When RSM Patch went online in December, there were literally dozens of readers. Well, now there are thousands. If you missed it the first time around back in December, take a look at one of the features stories that got us off and running:  . It's about a local organization that is doing some important work with troubled youth.

2. The City Council will be taking a closer look at 12 residents who are hoping to be appointed an interim council member through November, 2012. As a part of your civic duty, scroll to the end of the story where you have an opportunity to. Here's your chance to inform your neighbors—and don't think the current council members won't be looking at your comments, either.

3. Logan Sweet and Cory Thomson led over Orange Lutheran. If you've got speed to burn, then burn.

4. On this day in history, March 27, 1865, President Abraham Lincoln met with generals William T. Sherman and Ulysses S. Grant for the first time as a group to plan the final stages of attack on the Confederacy; the U.S. Civil War ended less than four weeks later. In 1905, fingerprint evidence was used—by Scotland Yard—to solve the murder case of married shopkeepers when a thumb print was left on the cash box. In 1973, Marlon Brando won an Academy Award for Best Actor in The Godfather, but sent actress Sacheen Littlefeather in his place to decline the award, citing Hollywood's negative portrayal of Native Americans in film. In 1998, the Food and Drug Administration approved Viagra only two years after it was patented, giving rise to direct-to-consumer marketing or prescription drugs that had been almost non-existent.

5. Celebrating birthdays today are singers Mariah Carey, who is at least 41—the figure is in question—and Fergie (36), as well as Quenton Tarantino (48) and Michael York (69). Others include jazz singer Sarah Vaughan (1924), "The Fugitive" David Janssen (1931) and Gloria Swanson (1899).
