Whiz Kid Accomplishment: John, a senior at Tesoro High, has not missed a day of school since kindergarten. His perfect attendance record has contributed to his outstanding academic achievement; he currently holds a 4.5 grade-point average.

Key to Awesomeness: Since the day he began his educational career, John Nichols has not missed a single day of school. He attended Arroyo Vista Elementary and Middle School from kindergarten through eighth grade. At the end of that school year, his teachers and school administrators presented him with a beautiful poem recognizing his perfect attendance. He also received a savings bond from Arroyo Vista Middle School in honor of his outstanding achievement. From that moment on, John decided he was going to keep his record going and has not missed a day of school over the past four years.

A senior at Tesoro High, John keeps busy with a variety of academic and athletic activities. He is a four-time letterman in cross country, and he has been a part of the school’s track and field team for the past three years. He keeps up a 4.5 GPA and is a California Scholarship Federation Lifetime Member, an AP scholar, an American MENSA member and National Society of High Schools member. He has also trained with Chinese Northern Eagle Claw Kung Fu martial arts since 2004.

In addition to these achievements, John is also a member of the Rancho Santa Margarita Teen Council, which meets regularly to serve the community in various ways. John was recently designated as Treasurer on the board of Teen Council.

“Even though John is up until at least midnight most nights working on homework, he is always up on time and ready to leave for school, said his mother, Jeannine.

She added that there have been times it’s been difficult to keep up his perfect attendance record, but he has persevered through it all.

John plans to attend UC Santa Barbara in the fall and study in the field of biology.

For his perfect attendance record, academic achievement and commitment to his community, John is an ideal candidate for this week’s Whiz Kid.
