Vin Diesel Vehicle Tops Weekend Box Office

The movie "Riddick" made about twice as much as the second-place entry, "Lee Daniels' The Butler."

The Vin Diesel action movie "Riddick" opened in the No. 1 spot this weekend, grossing $19 million.

"Lee Daniels' The Butler" was in second place, with $8.4 million in its fourth weekend in release, according to Hollywood.com Box Office.

In its second week of release, "Instructions Not Included" rose from fifth to third place, with $8.1 million in ticket sales Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

"Riddick" was made with a relatively modest budget of about $38 million, part of which was provided by the star.

Rounding out the 10 most-popular films in the U.S. and Canada, as estimated by the studios, were "We're The Millers" ($7.7 million), "Planes" ($4.1 million), "One Direction: This Is Us" ($4.1 million), Elysium" ($3.1 million), "Blue Jasmine" ($2.7 million), "Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters" ($2.5 million) and "The World's End" ($2.3 million).
