New Eatery Urban Jinx: Cheesy In A Good Way

Hidden away in the Dove Canyon Plaza, the Sweet and Savory Bar specializes in grilled cheese sandwiches—but not your mom's grilled cheese sandwiches.

Diners in Rancho Santa Margarita finally got their In-N-Out. They also have a waffle sandwich specialist.

Now, would you believe gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches?

That's the bulk of the menu at Urban Jinx Sweet and Savory Bar, which quietly opened on April 16 in the Dove Canyon Plaza, the hidden shopping center between Santa Margarita Catholic High and the Dove Canyon guard gate.

The small takeout storefront offers sidewalk dining, subtle cookies and, on Fridays, specials such as lemon chicken with penne pasta—or soup—that provide a break from the 12 different grilled cheese sandwiches that are offered.

"There's actually cooking involved," said Fay Grubb, who operates the family-run business with daughter Phoebe.

All but one of their sandwiches has at least two types of imported cheeses; the sandwiches range from $5.50 to $6.95. Breakfast sandwiches are on the horizon, per the request of some of those patrons who have found Urban Jinx.

Grubb comes from a family that has had restaurants but this is her first. It is next to San Giovani's Restaurant.

She said the response so far has been "really good."

"They like our sandwiches and drinks," Grubb said, "the only problem is people don't know we're here."

Urban Jinx is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
