Ecofest Brings Forth Ideas, Espouses Change in Attitudes

Ecological enthusiasts gather at Sukyo Mahikari Center for Spiritual Development on Saturday to raise environmental and organic awareness in Rancho Santa Margarita.

Nearly 200 ecological enthusiasts spent the first Saturday of summer joining forces at the Sukyo Mahikari Center for Spiritual Development. The Center hosted various venders and exhibitors, who contributed to the communal effort at the first 4Rs Summer Ecofest held in Rancho Santa Margarita.

Visitors were encouraged to take part in environmental programs, conversations and activities that focused on incorporating the "4 Rs"—Reduce, Re-use, Recycle, Repair—into everyday life. Participants raised awareness about product sustainability, eco-friendly architecture, organic consumer goods and other modern ecological issues.

Live performance by various musicians and an assortment of food and drinks helped keep all entertained on a picturesque June afternoon. Children had the opportunity to do their own recycling, face-painting and learn about the planet in the youth group tent.

Living Green Recycling collected unwanted electronic equipment. A large amount of assorted, decaying and potentially Earth-damaging waste was dropped off by area residents.
