Headline Rewind: The Week of July 3

There was a big week in crime news for Rancho Santa Margarita, and also a first look at BJ's Restaurant.

If it's Monday, it's the Fourth of July, which means fireworks. They are illegal in Rancho Santa Margarita, so unless you don't want to be liable for damages, be sure to convince your kids not to play with fireworks—no matter how great the temptation. Not illegal ones, and not safe and sane ones. They're all illegal.

However, if you want to watch fireworks, there are available in Orange County, including one in Rancho Santa Margarita.

Be sure to keep your pets in mind as well with  for ensuring Fido stays safe and sane.

CRIME

A couple of young men who had gone through graduation ceremonies earlier in the week were arrested for their role in detonating dry-ice bombs. However, significantly for Mitch Melugin, 18, and Bobby Browne, 19.

It was a week of revelations in the killing of the Santa Margarita Catholic High hockey team's strength and conditioning coach. After 16 days in captivity, the district attorney of accused killer Justin Tombleson. Another tidbit from the case: was a pocket knife.

BOY SCOUTS

Actually, he's a Cub Scout, but in the midst of the news about accused murderers, accused detonators of ice bombs, and skinheads, Patch told the story of , who distinguished himself on a homepage that included his mugshot alongside the guys who might have benefited from scouts when they were younger (see photo).

There were also a handful of kids who spent the week —some of it junk—in a class called Junkyard Wars. Makes you wonder, "Would I have thought of that when I was 9?"

SCHOOLS

Armageddon in the Capo Unified School District was averted as that will save classroom sizes and most of the 348 teaching jobs that had been earmarked for the unemployment line. Also, the CUSD delayed the opening of because it needs more time—at least until fall 2012.

FIRST TOUR

Take the first tour of the restaurant that is all the buzz—rivaled only by In-N-Out—when Restaurant and Brewhouse, which is located at the site of TGI Friday's. Believe us, there's stuff there you're gonna want to hear.

ALL-AMERICANS

Some were among those selected as all-Americans.

NEW CIVILIAN

There was a for Gary Thompson, the former councilman and city founding father, made  more poignant by the release afterward that he had just been told of his father's worsening health. Thompson's dad died two days later.

NEW BOARD MEMBER

A campaign to oust Capistrano Valley Unified School Board member Sue Palazzo is under way. It's not a recall effort, just in the Nov., 2012 election. They're asking for money.

THROWING STONES

The news wasn't specific to RSM, but you have to figure there would be plenty of interest in Third District Supervisor Jeff Stone broaching the subject of by Orange, Riverside and 11 other counties to form South California.

NEW WATER

The Santa Margarita Water District will play a pivotal role in water resources for Southern California. It will be in charge of studying the environmental impact on a pipeline that in eastern California to Riverside County. SMWD  will also purchase some of that water.
