4. On this date in history, March 21, 1963, Alcatraz closed its doors. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter announced an American boycott of the Moscow Summer Olympics in response to the Soviet Union’s failure to withdraw troops out of Afghanistan. Later that night, CBS aired the “Dallas” cliffhanger that led the world to ask, “Who Shot J.R.?” In 1871, journalist Henry Stanley went looking for explorer Dr. David Livingstone, who had been missing in Africa for six years while searching for the source of the Nile River; eight months after Stanley’s 2,000-man expedition began, he was able to utter the words, “Dr. Livingstone, I presume?”
5. Celebrating their 49th birthdays today are Matthew Broderick and Rosie O’Donnell. Others include Gary Oldman (53), Eddie Money (62), Timothy Dalton (67) and soccer star Ronaldinho (31). Also some legendary figures, the late Johann Sebastian Bach (1685), follies producer Florenz Ziegfeld (1867), and three-time Formula One champion Ayrton Senna (1960).
