Developer of Former Nissan Dealership to Put Plans Before the Voters in November

The City Council voted to place the measure on the ballot at its Wednesday meeting.

From the city of Rancho Santa Margarita:

The developer-sponsored initiative to rezone a portion of the city’s Auto Center was placed on the November 2014 ballot by a 4-0 vote of the City Council at its meeting on Wednesday.

A petition was circulated to gather signatures to place a measure on the ballot for the purpose of changing the zoning of the property at 29901 Santa Margarita Parkway, commonly known as the “former Nissan site,” from Auto Center/Auto Center Overlay to General Commercial/Auto Center Overlay. The requisite number of signatures was verified, qualifying the initiative for the November ballot.

Pursuant to the Elections Code, the City Council was required to either adopt the proposed initiative ordinance without modification or place it on the upcoming Nov. 4 ballot.

After receiving public testimony regarding the signature-gathering process and reports presented by city staff, the City Council voted to place the measure on the ballot.

“Zoning and land use decisions are fundamental to our community’s much envied quality of life and financial stability," Mayor Gamble said. "Because these decisions directly impact our residents, it is important that the public has the opportunity to thoroughly evaluate the issues and participate in determining the future of this property in the Auto Center.”
