Beach or Books? Library Friends Raise Thousands of Clams

There's reading material aplenty, and cash too, at the Rancho Santa Margarita Friends of the Library Bookstore, which had a great haul during its Spring Sale.

It may have been the perfect beach weekend, but hundreds of Rancho Santa Margarita residents opted to spend at least part of this month's heat wave buying books at the RSM Friends of the Library Spring Book Sale.

The group raised more than $4,000 to support library programs during the May 11-12 event.

“Funds raised by the Friends of the Rancho Santa Margarita Library help fill our shelves with the books that bring in readers,” says Jenny Gasset, Senior Branch Librarian. “They also pay for performers that make Family Night and our Summer Reading Events so much fun. From our smallest patrons playing and singing at Toddler Storytime, to children of all ages beating the 'summer slump' by participating in our Summer Reading Program, to teens learning about writing poetry or creating watercolors, to adults enjoying films from another culture—all benefit from the financial support provided by Friends of the Library.”

Evita Block, FOL bookstore manager, organized the event and had ample praise for her many helpers.

“We had lots of friendly, eager volunteers helping us during the sale and even signed up a few new members,” she said. “And, of course, we couldn’t succeed without the generous book donations we receive throughout the year. Friday morning was very busy and we had a steady stream of buyers on Saturday.”

Annual memberships cost just $20 for individuals and $25 for a family.

Members are eligible to receive a free $1 book with each purchase throughout the year and get into sales events an hour earlier than nonmembers for the best selection

The Friends of the Library Bookstore is located at 30902 La Promesa. It is still jam-packed with books and open to the public Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

You’ll find great prices on bestsellers and old favorites all year long.
