They Put the Con In Congress

According to our political leaders this is a dangerous world, but they have plans to save us.

On February 4, 2013, there was a sense of relief throughout the country, when the Congress went on vacation. Congress scares us with stories of things we should fear, and of reasons to expand the government to protect us from these fearful risks. Then it hit me, what if they are right and we are in danger? Maybe these really bright men and women of Congress are our only hope for survival.  Putting pen to paper, I decided to note those things that may end it all.

A meteorite hit Russia, an asteroid just missed the earth, and we are told there are uncountable asteroids, many of which will hit the planet. Space junk is to be feared.

The government has given out millions of dollars in grants to fight global warming. Actually, if you listen to Prince Charles and Al Gore, we are living on borrowed time. Global warming is to be feared ... along with Al Gore and Prince Charles.

In the journal Nature, Chelsea Rochman and Mark Browne want plastics labeled as hazardous to our health and to that of wildlife. Some cities are moving to ban plastic bags from the grocery store. Plastic is to be feared.

The London Zoological Society is warning against logging, pollution, mining, agriculture and major public works.  It further reports 19% of the reptiles in the world are in danger. Furniture, heat, food and infrastructure are to be feared ... along with some really angry snakes.

The website PopulationAlert.org is warning we are losing acres of forest daily, losing the use of land through soil erosion, desert land is being formed due to land mismanagement, and human biological waste is polluting the oceans, all of this due to overpopulation. Poopy populations are to be feared.

Professional football is too dangerous. Players, not understanding the risk, are ruining their lives by playing football. Professional football is to be feared ... along with Oakland Raiders fans.

ScienceRay.com says acid rain, caused by invisible gases from automobiles or coal burning power plants, is falling on our people. A hole in the ozone layer is exposing us to ultraviolet rays. Chemical pollutants can affect our immune response. Rainfall is becoming heavier everywhere in the world. And vapor trails from aircraft diminish incoming solar radiation over most populated areas. Everyday life is to be feared.

EzineArticles.biz featured an article on gardening. Thank goodness, something we can do in safety. Safe that is, except for snakes, deer, raccoons, rabbits, groundhogs, skunks and opossums which could involve everything from attacks to disease.  Does Congress know this? Gardening is to be feared ... as is the accompanying animal uprising.

My goodness, President Obama and the Democrats are right, this is a dangerous world and we can/are going to die. We will die and it could involve anything from getting out of bed to walking in the garden. We do need politicians to protect us, from ourselves and our environment. We do need to live in fear.

It felt so good to realize, with the help of politicians, we can be safe. Then I read an article in brightubeducation.com talking about the danger of technology.  They are reporting we should fear the government abuse of technology, and using it to control people. They talk about the danger of big government attempting to control all aspects of our lives. Wow, it is bad news that our only chance of being safe is the government and the government plans to control us. Government and super computers are to be feared.

We have no chance. If we live long enough, something is going to kill us. No matter who we turn our lives over to, there is a bad outcome. If we are going to die anyway, maybe we should tell the government to protect our borders, enforce our Constitution and just mind its own business. If we are going to die anyway, why not enjoy ourselves and stop working 50% of our time to pay for a government—a government that will not protect us from dying, unless it is allowed to control us.

Since there is such a relief to have our Congressional leaders on vacation, maybe we should pay them to stay on vacation. Imagine if we had a break where we were allowed to face the world, without somebody warning us of all the dangers.  It would be less expensive and a lot more fun. So much fun, it would probably kill us.

Fun is to be feared.

Big government is a term used by people who want fewer government regulations that might affect their own profits or prevent them from infringing on the rights of their neighbors in order to do whatever it is that they want to do. It is used to incite fear and distrust. If truth be told, most people want their rights protected and government is the only way to do that.

And sadly, corporate and individual greed have been responsible for many tragedies. They will not police themselves.

Good honest people who are willing to run for office without intentions of running for reelection would never get the support of the D or R parties from the start. Many (over a dozen) of the Tea Party candidates elected to congress in 2010 ran on an anti-Wall Street platform and before the end of their 1st year in office were taking money from the Too Big To Fail banks. And I can prove it. My thesis is good honest people don't get the support of the D or R parties to get elected to Congress. So they don't turn bad after being elected. They already are bad or wouldn't have been endorsed by their party. We need some government oversight over the private sector. 2008 happened as a result of collusion between Capital Hill (both D's and R's) and Wall Street. No one was guarding the hen house. The aftermath spoke for itself. We needed some oversight and no bailouts. We got no oversight and lots of bailouts. You cannot trust a businessman any more than you can trust a politician. Both need watchful eyes looking over their shoulders. When collusion happens, it's the same as having no oversight.

"What is the difference between a bomb carried by a drone and one carried by a soldier? The one carried by a drone won't kill the soldier." Are you joking? There have been several instances of Drones taking out American and allied troops thorugh 'friendly fire'. But I was referring to POTUS Obama telling Robert Gibbs, his former Press Secretary, when he worked for Obama to keep his lips sealed on the US Drone Program that was killing our own soliders/allied soldiers and innocent Afghani's and Pakistani civilians. The American people had every right to know about this and Obama ordered it covered up. He should be forced to return that Nobel Peace Prize. It taints the honor of such a sacred award and makes a mockery of it.

Federal spending at the start of the 20th Century was 7% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Federal Spending in the 1940's was 22% of GDP. In the 1990's Federal spending was 35% of GDP. Now spending is 40% of our GDP. (information from usgovernmentspending.com) Our National Debt grows each year since our expenditures exceed our expenditures. With a greedy business you are free to avoid their products or services. The government does not allow you to avoid their taxes and requires certain acts. Greedy businesses cut excess spending daily, the Federal Government never cuts, it only grows.

Yes, the reusable plastic grocery sack is turning out to be a safe haven for deadly bacteria including salmonella and ecoli. By all means lets continue to plow head first into the 17th century in the name of environmentalism.
MFriedrich February 26, 2013 at 01:03 AM
John, this is the part where we need to blame wars, the military industrial complex (which Eisenhower warned us about) and millions old people who just wont die at 60 any more.

The tragedy of friendly fire is not limited to drones. Barack Obama is an honorable and honest man. He is one of many who have run for office.

"And now you compare a person looking for a job to a person looking to rob a bank." Any way you size it up a crime is a crime and no crime (no matter how big or small) should get rewarded in a civilized society. It is the antithesis of what a civilized society should represent. Rewarding crime incentivizes crime. And that can NEVER result in a positive outcome. I bet you would be the last to open your home doors for an illegal family and pay for their education, food and medical care. Yet you want to mandate that for all Americans. heh. The hypocrisy is flowing over.

"So how would you prevent these potentially life altering or ending childhood diseases? And don't you fear polio, diphtheria, measles, etc.?" We eradicated all these diseases decades ago. Now they are resurfacing. Why do you think that might be? Could it be that unscreened and illegal migrants from 3rd world nations where those diseases still exist are bringing they back into our country and into our school? How else would those diseases reappear all at once? In fact, the CDC says that unscreened migrants bring those diseases across the border and infect our children and citizens. And I can prove it if you would like to see the link. So the rational solution would be to deport illegals and bring in legal immigrants who play by the rules, to include being medically screened before they cross our border. There are MILLIONS of legal immigrants who have filled out their paperwork, paid their fees, taken their tests and who have been medically screened just waiting for the green light to enter America. I say bring them in and kick the illegal migrants out. Very simple actually.
JustUs February 26, 2013 at 04:08 AM
"Barack Obama is an honorable and honest man." I could write an entire dissertation showing that to be a completely false statement.

The only way any immigrant would not bring these diseases into the country is if they were immunized. I thought you were against forced immunizations.
Silence Dogood February 26, 2013 at 04:48 AM
@JustUs, I for one would love to read that, but in the interest of saving us both time, I'll just watch any random hour of Fox News to hear "your" thoughts.
JustUs February 26, 2013 at 04:49 AM
"The only way any immigrant would not bring these diseases into the country is if they were immunized. I thought you were against forced immunizations." I couldn't care less what they do in 3rd world nations. They can run their countries any way they see fit. I just vigorously oppose them coming into my country and spreading their diseases so that our kids need 25 injections by the time their 6 years old as a condition to be enrolled into school. They need more shots today than I needed when I was their age. How's that for progress? It's a shame that our kids are human pin cushions because the US government refuses to crack down on illegal immigrants and secure our international border. The American children become the victims. There's no telling the long term side effects of all those vaccine injections. I feel sorry for parents these days. What a dilemma they are forced into!

There are more ways to prevent illness and you think this is a problem? Ad you only care about children born in this country? What an outlook you have.
fact checker February 26, 2013 at 05:22 AM
What I am willing to do is make sure the children of immigrants receive an education. It is best for them and best for all of us. Their families are here. That is the reality. They support our economy. Ask the farmers, restaurant owners and construction industry. They are not going to "self deport." We are not going to round them up and send them home. Their employees do not want them to go. So we also must provide an education for their children and we must face reality and provide a way for them to legally enter the society they are already part of. And that society provides a free education for all which benefits everyone. And that society needs to make healthcare a right for all. That also benefits everyone.

Greedy businesses cut expenses to ensure more greedy profits. They do not self police and they never will. They put profit above safety, quality control and the environment. Not every business is greedy but enough are to make regulation of their practices a critical job for government.
fact checker February 26, 2013 at 05:35 AM
No JustUs you could not write such a dissertation, which is why you didn't.
JustUs February 26, 2013 at 05:58 AM
Boy, you sure are foot loose and fancy free with other people's money, aren't you? Did you ever consider that we use those taxdollars to help US citizens or even immigrants who come here legally? Or do you prefer that we spend it all on criminals? Just curious? Why don't you invite an illegal family to stay with you at your place, all expenses paid? A person with a heart as big as yours might even invite 2 illegal families to move in. You come across as a super generous person.
JustUs February 26, 2013 at 06:02 AM
"Ad you only care about children born in this country? What an outlook you have." Yes, I am an American, born and bred. I believe in taking care of our fellow Americans first. I oppose rewarding criminals. I know that might sound strange to you but the large majority of Americans are in my camp, not yours.

I have more faith in humanity than that.
John Webb February 26, 2013 at 06:42 PM
mfriedrich, do you really believe the increase in the Federal Budget is mostly wars and the military industrial complex? Healthcare, food stamps, federal expenditures on education, expansion of bureauracy in Washington, expansion into areas reserved for the states, none of this played a role. Plus, go easy on the above 60 people, that hit too close to home.
JustUs February 26, 2013 at 06:45 PM
A perfect example is ObamaCare. I remember him campaigning for office and during his 1st term when we were constantly told that if we made less than $250,000 a year that we would not have to pay an extra dime under the Affordable HealthCare Act and he swore up and down that ObamaCare was not a tax. He also told us that our individual healthcare costs would get reduced. He also told us there would be no mandate. The lastest information tells us that the cheapest plan under ObamaCare for a family of 4/5 is $20,000 a year. And a few weeks after Obama appeared on the George Stephanopolous show and vigorously asserted that ObamaCare was not a tax, his legal team appeared before the high courts and argued that ObamaCare and the mandate was constitutional because it was a tax. And that is only one topic. ObamaCare has turned into the largest tax on the American people in the history of our nation. And Obama lied to get there. That is neither "honorable" or "honest". At some point we must face the truth.
Yeparoo February 26, 2013 at 07:22 PM
John, you don't have to go as far back as 113 years for a comparison of spending. In 2007 federal spending was 2.7t. In 2013 federal spending will be 3.8t. That is a 40% increase in federal spending in 6 years with on war ended. The 'Sequestration' hysteria is all about a 1% decrease in spending, spread over 10 years. Seems like the theater of the absurd to me.
JustUs February 26, 2013 at 08:55 PM
Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid and Defense consume about 65% of the US Federal budget. Welfare has grown (almost doubled) since 2007. 1 in 6 Americans collect food stamps. California has 12% of the nation's popuiation and 33% of the nation's welfare population (33% is one in three for the mathematically challenged). It stands to reason that California's welfare costs are substantially higher proportionally than the rest of the nation. But the Big 3 are Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid and Defense. Of those 2 health care costs are the most damaging. In 1980 the US spent abaout $53B on health care. In 2011 we spent upwards of $900B. 18% of GDP. And it continues to rise at about a 10% clip, notwithstanding ObamaCare. That is the most dangerous of the 3 IMO. And with the pushback against sequestration (only about 2% of spending. lol) it just goes to show that the leaders couldn't care less about behaving in a fiscally responsible manner. They are willfully pushing us off the fiscal cliff which they purportedly saved us from. lol. They just don't care. We are Russia back in the year 1985. We destroyed communism and now have turned into what it took us $trillions$ to destroy. Go figure. I don't know exactly when it's going to happen, or for how long they can continue to kick the can down that old fiscal road, but eventually whatever government entitlements you are collecting will shivel up and die. You will see lots of gray haired people marching on the freeway.
JustUs February 26, 2013 at 08:58 PM
And don't forget, Obama was for sequestration before he was against it. More lies. That would be included in my dissertation showing what a dishonest and dishonorable man Barry actually is if I were to write one.
JustUs February 26, 2013 at 09:07 PM
Remember way back when Obama told us that we'd have to 'eat our peas'??? HAH! I do. I have the memory of an elephant. Most people forget those lies. I don't. He said that at the time they raised the debt ceiling by $2T and created the Stupid...er....I mean Super Committee that failed. Obama was the one who promised sequestration if the Stupid....er....I mean Super Committee failed. Remember? I do. Now he's fighting it tooth and nail. Liar.
JustUs February 26, 2013 at 11:31 PM
Oh, Obama told us that we would get the same health care plan as Congress has too! Remember??? I do!!! :^)
Silence Dogood February 27, 2013 at 06:05 AM
@JustUs, Memory of an elephant? Don't sell yourself short. Based on the size (and quality) of your droppings here on the Patch I'd say you're probably 100% pachyderm. Peanut anyone?
JustUs February 27, 2013 at 06:32 AM
Silence, your another one of those clowns who is capable only of cheap shots when I speak the truth with facts. You can't attack my claim about Obama because it is factual so you resort to attacking me. And that tells us everything we need to know about you. heh. :^)
