Can You AVOID College Out Of State Tuition?

Is some way for CA students to avoid paying out-of-state tuition?

Q. I heard there is some way for CA students to avoid paying out-of-state tuition at UNLV.  How does that work?

A. The Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) is a program of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE).  Students who are residents of certain western states may enroll at participating two- and four-year college programs outside of their home state at a reduced tuition rate (150% of the in-state tuition rate).  The WUE program is not centralized, so each participating school sets its own criteria.  Also, the program is not an entitlement, so it must be applied for. Despite some myths, not all departments in WUE colleges are eligible either.  The spaces are limited, so they’re offered on a first-come, first-served basis.  Check the list of WUE schools, as not all participate in the program (wue.wiche.edu).

Upcoming Seminars:  On April 21st, (Saturday) a presentation entitled ‘Why is it So Hard For a GOOD Student to Get Into a Top College’ will be given by Mr. Don Betterton from Princeton University.  Don served as Director of Financial Aid and as a member of the Admissions Committee before retiring last summer after 32 years with the university.  There is no charge, but reservations are required due to limited seating.  If you have a high achiever that is considering ‘highly-selective schools’, you won’t want to miss Don’s presentation.  Click HERE to register.
