9-1-1 Is Not Your Personal Gripe Line

Sure, everyone has something they want to moan and groan about. But calling the 9-1-1 operator is not the place for it.

According to the blotter of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, a Rancho Santa Margarita resident let his fingers do the dialing, and what they dialed up was trouble.

The incident began Tuesday night when deputies received a report from an apparently drunk informant who wanted to point out there were 25 underage subjects drinking at the Kaleidoscope Center in Mission Viejo.

The calls continued. Between 11:15 p.m. and 12:50 a.m. on Wednesday morning, 9-1-1 dispatch received nine calls from the same individual: three of the calls were pertaining to the alleged underage drinking binge, and the other six were an attempt to solicit some type of ID because it was supposedly suspended by the sheriff’s department.

The operator told the young man he “is not getting a new ID tonight,” but the lad argued that the operator was lying. The operator noted the subject’s failure to comprehend he had to go to the DMV to receive a new ID.

The subject then gave the operator his home address, on the 32700 block of Meadowlark Lane, and at 1:20 a.m., the family received a knock on the door from sheriff deputies.

The subject was advised about excessive 9-1-1 use—and his father took away his phone.
