Firefighters Airlift Injured Hiker

A helicopter, sheriff's canine and 45 firefighters mounted a search for the woman, who was found on the side of a hill around 3 p.m. in Silverado Canyon.

A 20-year-old woman who fell off a trail and was injured while hiking in Silverado Canyon was hoisted to safety today by a fire department helicopter, authorities said.

The woman used her cell phone to call authorities for help about 1:20 p.m., but the signal was weak and the call was dropped, according to the Orange County Fire Authority.

At 3:49 p.m., she was placed in a Stokes basket, hoisted aboard a helicopter and flown to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana for treatment of injuries that were described as moderate to serious, the OCFA reported.
