Updated: Man Attempts Suicide By Lighting Himself on Fire

The 50-year-old suffered second- and third-degree burns after pouring gas on himself inside his home.

A 50-year-old Rancho Santa Margarita man attempted to kill himself late Friday night by dousing himself with gasoline and lighting himself on fire in the bedroom of his home.

The incident occurred about 11:15 p.m. Orange County Sheriff deputies were notified by a neighbor who heard the man screaming on the deck of his condominium.

The residence is a center unit attached to two other homes, neither of which were damaged. No one else was injured.

According to Lt. Brian Schmutz, chief of police services in Rancho Santa Margarita, the man had earlier had a domestic fight with his estranged wife, with whom he does have children. The two were living at separate residences. The argument took place at her residence.

The man's suicide attempt took place after returning to his complex on Blue Oak.

"His burns were severe—second- and third-degree over most of his body," said Schmutz, who added that the injuries are life threatening.

He was administered to by sheriff deputies and OCFA medics at the scene before being transported to Western Medical Center's burn unit in Santa Ana. He is in critical condition.

The fire authority put out the fire and its arson investigators went to the scene to investigate.
