Motorcyclist, Without Helmet, Suffers Head Injury

Neighborhood crash takes place on Christmas day.

By Martin Henderson

Laws requiring helmets while riding motorcycles are in place for a reason, but a man who took a Christmas ride in a Rancho Santa Margarita neighborhood dismissed the helmet and suffered the consequences.

According to the blotter of the Orange County Sheriff's Department, the 21-year-old man suffered head trauma, brain swelling and was losing consciousness at the scene; he was taken to Mission Hospital.

Sgt. Frank Nin of Rancho Santa Margarita police services, said the man is doing well and expected to make a full recovery. Still, it's going to leave a mark.

According to Nin, the cyclist began riding into a curve when he lost control of the motorcycle and purposefully laid the bike down which caused him to make contact with the roadway. However, he was not wearing a helmet and suffered the subsequent head injury.

The 9-1-1 call was made on Wednesday, 3:08 p.m., from Gazapo in Melinda Heights.
