The boys’ soccer team at Santa Margarita Catholic High is being investigated by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department for an alleged hazing incident in Hawaii.
The OCSD is involved at the request of the Honolulu Police Department regarding an event that took place when the team was there to play three games from Dec. 31 to Jan. 3. The Eagles went undefeated against Hawaii’s second-ranked Kalani, 18-time state champion Punahou, and current state champ Mililani.
Three players have reportedly been dismissed from the soccer program since the allegation was made; CBS News reported they had been expelled.
CBS also reported the hazing involved urinating on at least four younger players and striking them with a bag of feces that broke open on impact.
Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange spokesman Steve Bohannon said in a statement: “The incident did not involve anything related to public safety. It is being dealt with according to school policies and procedures.”
On Friday night, the Eagles got a shutout performance from goalkeeper Kirby Chandler and a goal from Jake Fisher in the 69th minute to win at Mater Dei, 1-0, and remain in second place—behind JSerra—in the Trinity League.
Santa Margarita (15-3-4 overall, 4-0-3 in league) is ranked No. 3 in Orange County.
The Eagles program has won eight Southern Section championships, the last in 2008 that ended a string of three in a row.
